A historically Black university in East Austin, founded in 1875 and the city's first institution of higher learning, affiliated with the United Methodist Church and the United Church of Christ and a member institution of the UNCF. It occupies a 24-acre campus on Chicon Street and received a $150 million gift in September 2025, the largest in its history. Enrollment is approximately 1,200.
