First English Lutheran Church
Church · Lutheran
First English Lutheran Church is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America near the University of Texas campus in Austin, founded in 1936 as the city's first English-language Lutheran congregation at a time when worship was commonly held in German and other northern European languages. In its own words, since 1989 it has "openly welcomed persons of all sexual orientations and gender identities and expressions to full participation in the church and society," and it was one of the first Texas congregations to join the Reconciling in Christ program. Its worship is rooted in the historic liturgical and musical traditions of the church, centred on Word and Sacrament, and the congregation operates a child development center that has served the community for more than fifty years.
